How Sharing Works

When you run the agent from a folder, that folder becomes accessible to AI assistants connected to your workspace. The AI can read files, list directories, and search within that folder.

What the AI can access

  • Files and folders inside the directory you shared
  • Subdirectories recursively

What the AI cannot access

  • Anything outside the shared folder
  • Files matching your .devicelinkignore rules (e.g. .env, private keys, node_modules)
  • Anything on a device that is offline - the agent stopped, or the browser tab closed

Your files are encrypted in transit and never stored

File contents are streamed in real-time to the AI over TLS. DeviceLink's servers act as an authenticated go-between - they pass the request along but never store or buffer your file data.

Passing a request along means our service decrypts it, so file contents exist in server memory for as long as it takes to forward them. They are never written to disk, cached, or logged.

Access is instant to stop. Close the agent terminal, or the browser tab you shared from, and all AI access to your files ends immediately. Nothing is cached.
